The Beverly Center, an upscale shopping mall in Beverly Hills, California, has announced it will terminate Pet Love’s lease sometime in the next few months. And this Pet Love is only one of several stores that have closed as a result of Best Friends' Puppy-Store-Free L.A.

While shopping for pet food in 2008, Maryam Faresh and her partner Bruce Meade saw a sign hanging on the wall with a picture of a white puppy with spots and strange looking eyes. The sign read, “Blind and deaf puppy needs home.” Immediately, they went to meet the puppy – within minutes, they knew they had to have her.

The Humane Society and other groups oppose it as a power grab by big agriculture to prevent another Proposition 2 (the initiative passed last year in California to improve standards for farm animal care.) Would such a bill lead to jurisdiction over puppy mill breeders as well? There may also be unintended consequences.
