The killing of Cecil was equated with murder, a moral crime rather than a symptom of a ecological problem. Animal rights is concerned with individual animals, and their suffering and welfare. So now there are lots of lions, and they like buffalo, so now there are less buffalo. So we do the best we can with what we have.

In the past I have attributed some of this conflict to differences between the conservation mindset and that of animal rights/animal welfare. We all know the answer to that – not thinking at all about the how – how on earth you actually do that – and causing a civil war that has killed hundreds of millions.

We Should Kill More Lions

The interests of those working for conservation and those working for animal rights and animal welfare don’t always perfectly align like you might think they do. Cheetahs would be quite happy with you shooting Lions as Lions are bastards that keep stealing their kills. There is no solidarity among the big cats.
