Dedicated keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Nairobi Elephant Nursery in Kenya protect baby Shukuru from the cold and rain, and the risk of pneumonia, with a custom-made raincoat. A mobile vet unit was able to tranquilize her, clean her wounds, and extract the spear.

The killing of Cecil was equated with murder, a moral crime rather than a symptom of a ecological problem. Take an example, Tembe Elephant Park in South Africa. So now there are lots of lions, and they like buffalo, so now there are less buffalo. But the story wasn’t really one about conservation.

Elephants, whales, hippopotamuses, giraffes, and alligators use low-frequency sounds to communicate over long distances, often miles; and bats, dolphins, whales, frogs, and various rodents use high-frequency sounds to find food, communicate with others, and navigate. I also watched a red fox bury her mate after a cougar had killed him.

There are times when acting in the conservation interest of a species or ecosystem means that the welfare of specific animals is compromised, which is a fancy way of saying that conservationists sometimes have to kill animals for the greater good. There is no solidarity among the big cats.
