Michael Vick, whose unearthed gambling operation was found to not only force dogs to fight, but also kill under-performing dogs in twisted ways, is only one story in a mass of untold stories.

BSL (Breed-Specific Legislation) is the canine equivalent of racial profiling, banning certain dog breeds that have been labeled “dangerous.” Focusing on the breeds, instead of putting the blame where it belongs — on the individual dogs and their irresponsible owners — is discrimination in no uncertain terms.

To the Editor: Re “ States Try to Weigh Safety With Dog Owners’ Rights ” (news article, July 23): Any law that deems a dog as dangerous or vicious based on appearance, breed or phenotype is unfair and discriminatory. It seems to me that discrimination against pit bulls and Rottweilers is eminently justified.
