Ethiopia’s Endemics

Tours groups that I guided to Ethiopia ten years ago had to endure very basic accommodation, almost no surfaced roads and low levels of service. Black-winged Lovebird Another endemic now shared with Eritrea, this cute little parrot is not uncommon in forest edges and woodlands, even occurring in towns and cities.

I was in contact with a group of birders for whom I arranged and guided an annual tour to Africa. Here local hunters had known about the colony and for generations had been harvesting the birds by simply picking the adults off their nests during the breeding season. We also knew we had discovered Africa’s next hot birding destination.

Each male builds numerous nests, most of which are rejected by the female, who will eventually select a nest she is happy with, allow the proud architect who usually hangs under his masterpiece to mate with her and then begins the breeding process.
