As you’ll remember, Kentucky’s Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources unanimously passed its sandhill crane hunting proposal. Fish and Wildlife Service for final approval or denial. One was “Superdad,” one of the few successful breeding whooping cranes in the entire eastern population. The proposal now goes to the U.S.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. My first bird in Washington DC, where I am visiting for the weekend.

Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. Fish and Wildlife Service tells states when they may propose a hunting season on cranes, and has ultimate jurisdiction over whether the states get their seasons.
