April 21, 2008 To the Editor: Re “ Million-Dollar Meat ” (editorial, April 23): In vitro meat might not appeal to everyone, but I am guessing that the day PETA awards its prize money will be a happy day for the billions of land animals bound for slaughter. More than nine billion chickens are slaughtered each year in the United States.

An Affront to the Idea of Family

That doesn't mean that 99% of dairy products are from family farms , as the average number of cows on each family farm is just over 100. Families, so the commercials go, don't engage in untoward aspects of animal husbandry that might hurt the cows. The cows' tails swing in the breeze. But so are family farms.

Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. It is a very interesting read, and as I stated in the post I wrote on my blog , part of the team that wrote the plan is the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, one of the states proposing a Sandhill Crane slaughter.
