According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service , there are about 10 billion breeding birds in the US. The maximum population size may be closer to 20 billion in the fall, and 10 billion at the start of the Spring breeding season. I can confirm that other sources I’ve read give similar numbers.

Also frequent escapees (or very free ranging domestics) are guinea fowl and to a lesser extent a number of other gamebirds up to and including peacocks. It persists in captivity at a breeding facility on Guam and in a number of American zoos. Or at least it was prior to the late 80’s when it was extirpated from the island.

When I started blogging, I thought that if more people sought out free-range, grass-fed "beef," more animals would be saved/fewer would be created. The question of course is, are you really significantly decreasing suffering? Lesson #15 It's okay to change your mind. And I still wrestle with opportunities to decrease suffering.
