Scanning the skies for Zone-tailed hawks

Last week I wrote about the interesting hunting habits of our local Harris’s Hawks. Zone-tailed Hawks can be found in the extreme lower parts of the US, in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, with an estimated population of 450-650 birds. There is a small population in Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and northern Argentina.

Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls

Mike had just invited me to Nikon’s Prostaffer Retreat that was to be held at a ranch in south Texas. These wily and diminutive owls occur from Bolivia and Argentina northward through Central America (check out this post on Pico Bonito ) and only just occur in the United States in Arizona and south Texas.
