While wandering around my home borough on Sunday morning doing some post-snowstorm birding I made my way to Oakland Lake in northeastern Queens with the hope of finding Rusty Blackbirds to add to my year list. Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA. In the case of these Tricolored Blackbirds , they are formed for DEFENSE. I don’t believe in perpetual optimism (I’m just not wired for it), but I think it will do you good in this situation. Other flocks don’t come off as being so homogeneous. Flocks are formed for many reasons.

One or two Tufted Ducks show up at Lake Merritt in Oakland every year, with this drake in particular often lending itself for soul-satisfying views. Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA. Yellow-billed Magpies are found just inland, and Tricolored Blackbirds can be found on Point Reyes (a legendary migrant trap) by the thousand in the fall.
