The capital is San Juan, an important center of Caribbean culture and transportation. But other species have not been recorded in the ABA Area, including, of course, all 16 Puerto Rican endemics. Obviously, hurricanes pose a threat to some species. Puerto Rico became a territory in 1898 and a commonwealth in 1952.
