Given how hot and sometimes humid it is in Shanghai in July, it is a wonder there are any birds here in this month, particularly taking into account that most bird nests are not air-conditioned. One of the reasons stated is “the benefits of the people” (not the birds). Still, a few spend the summer here.

And where all those birds are? This map shows the distribution of the World’s bird species, based on overlying the breeding and wintering ranges of all known species. And it raises a question: if all the birds are having a party over there, am I in the wrong spot? I am talking 600 or 700+ bird species. Why am I here?

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? photo by JZ When a population of birds numbers only 400 in the wild, there can be no such thing as a “nonessential” individual. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism. It flies on.
