I enjoy collecting children’s books about birds and nature that I come across in the expected (book stores) and unexpected (academic library conference reports) places. Parrots Over Puerto Rico is a wonderland of colors and shapes. The Taínos named the birds Iguacas, after their call. The birds thrive.

This was not a birding vacation but a beach-and-water-park vacation. Regular readers here at 10,000 Birds, however, will not be surprised to learn that I managed to see some birds in between riding water slides, lounging on the beach, and drinking rum. So, what birds did I see? But, apparently, it works.

Last year beats were being spotted way beyond their usual habitat with checklists shared from India, Puerto Rico and Israel. It is good to see that the westerners have picked up the gauntlet after their humiliation in the first list and are currently out-birding the eastern hemisphere by 771:345.
