Searching for vultures in India

What was the weirdest place you ever birded? Yet, in 1990s India has killed more than 99% of its Gyps vultures (e.g. in 1980s there were up to 80 million White-rumped Vultures in India – today the population numbers only several thousand). Oddly, I saw no rats, only a mongoose or two and a few stray dogs. A war zone?
