Out into the Atlantic Ocean, 400 miles from the coast of Senegal, lies an archipelago of islands known as Cape Verde. On the most popular tourist island of Sal, I was lucky to encounter the Hoopoe Lark , a bird of desert and dune. It has been likened to other birds such as roadrunner and mockingbird.

My best birds of the weekend were all part of a huge swarm of Chimney Swifts circling around what I surmise was their chimney dwelling. No bird says summer to me like those flying cigars. On Friday night Seth Ausubel, my frequent birding buddy, and I discussed our birding options for Saturday morning. A little after 6 AM we had both checked the weather radar and decided that the rain had stopped and that I would pick him up at 6:30 and we would go birding somewhere on the coast. In the meantime, sooties!

This week, a new study was published about Sparrows in Nebraska, that in some ways resembles the study by Bumpus and may well be a better example of Natural Selection in birds. House Sparrows ( Passer domesticus ) are introduced birds over most of their very large range. As you know, a lot of birds are killed in the U.S.

According to a local African superstition that I just made up, it is not harmful to eat toxically colored birds if you eat them in the dark. Colonial history reflected in bird names. Unfortunately, the Fork-tailed Drongo is not the honest and god-fearing bird one could wish for. Some people wonder whether god exists.
