I am not sure about the security situation in Iraq these days but at least some people do ornithological research there – resulting in papers such as one titled “Breeding observations of the Black-winged Kite Elanus caeruleus (Desfontaines , 1789) in Iraq” Impressive. A relative of this species is the Yellow-bellied Tit.

Apparently, when breeding, the two parents divide incubation duties, with one bird taking over the daytime duties and another one the nighttime. So common that my local bird guide actually gave the species as an example of a very common bird he was still happy to see during the COVID lockdown when it showed up in his backyard.

How can we say that magic is a farce when the May blossoms are backdropping bright, breeding plumaged Canadas , Magnolias , Chestnut-sideds , chocolate Bay-breasteds , and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks ? Ok, that last example might be more indicative of obsession than something from the world of Doug Henning but I bet you get the point.

And, sometimes, I use chip notes to try to lure a bird in, using just a couple of notes and only if I was sure it would not be interfering with a breeding bird or other birder’s enjoyment. For example, the Chestnut-sided Warbler is shown in male and female plumage as well as juvenile plumage and in flight from above.
