Bird Counts and Cold Fronts in Costa Rica

Those were some interesting additions to a day of birding that also gave us more expected ones like Bat Falcon, Black-collared Hawk, Bare-crowned Antbird , and 125 other species. Despite rain during part of the day, the other teams also did very well and we ended up with a final overall tally of more than 270 species.

The Little Big Year-Week 44: Off to the islands ‘Mon

The crunch is on, and with less than two weeks left in the year, we are trying to squeeze out as many more species as possible. Last week, we quite impulsively jumped in a rental car and drove 2600 miles round trip to south Texas to pick up 34 new species. L ittle Big Year species – 1280. Bahama species – 38.

They contributed 150 lists accounting for 1032 species and more than 36,000 individual birds. The Little Big Year – Week 43: Last minute trip to Texas

Well, that’s just not really our style, so at the very last minute, we rented a high gas mileage car, thru a few things in a cooler, and our birding gear and headed for south Texas. We left Tucson on Monday, and drove to Alpine, Texas for our first night. That lovely little owl represented bird number 34 for the run thru Texas!

Birding and Safari-ing South Africa with the ABA

There were birders from a wide cross-section of the United States: Colorado, Ohio, Idaho, Iowa, Wyoming, Washington State, Pennsylvania, New York State, New Jersey, California, Texas, Florida. Betty’s Bay was also a great place to see all of South Africa’s cormorant species, including the endangered Bank Cormorant.
