Presumably, the species also not only eats fruit but also mammals and possibly birds –the HBW specifically mentions the species catching bats emerging from caves at dusk, and feeding them to juveniles. Another advantage to ballistic food transport is that the fruit seeds are protected from damage when they are swallowed whole.
