Brewer’s Blackbirds and House Finches were carting nesting material to and fro. Things were quiet at first as I headed upwards, until I startled two Mule Deer. The spectacular views of the valley also offered me looks at a passing Common Raven , Red-tailed Hawk , and an adult Bald Eagle. It just feels this steep.

Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears. And although the single Bald Eagle we spotted just outside the park was probably more interested in fish, they are known to enjoy fawn as well, when they can carry it.
