There are a lot of small sheltered bays along the coast and you can choose to walk along the beach or promenade. On the sheltered side of several jetties I came across small groups of up to seven Hoary-headed Grebes bobbing along. Birding Australia Australian birds Melbourne' Black Swans near Ricketts Point. It remains a good location for observing birds close to the city and easily accessible by public transport. The distance around the lake is approximately five kilometres and there are limited places to shelter if a storm approaches fast. Some of the sheltered areas were being used by the Chestnut Teal as a roost.
