There are 11 species of birds that breed in the Ross Sea region. On the Balleny Islands Antarctic Fulmar , Antarctic Prion and Cape Petrel also breed. And the Mammals.

Bigger than an Empidonax flycatcher and smaller than a Myiarchus , the Eastern Phoebe is usually only mistaken for a pewee, and even that becomes unlikely with experience. In fact, this is one species that seems to thrive in the face of rampant development. Looking at its range map, this phoebe seems to have split the U.S.

Giant tyrannosaur like dinosaurs had systems for efficient breathing that modern birds use to facilitate the aerobically demanding task of flight, but those dinosaurs did not fly (see: Aerosteon riocoloradensis : A Very Cool Dinosaur from Argentina. The feature distinguishes birds from other species; All birds have them, no other species do.

It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida. This may sound mundane, but my Best Bird of the Year is a species we all know quite well in one form or another.
