I went to a restaurant for a work lunch and everyone ate meat but me, even the animal lovers. Gene Bauer from Farm Sanctuary appears in this article. Pretty intense, but I hope people read it. There is a disturbing hedonism to eating. We just don't think about where that flesh came from.and most of us don't care.

I foresee a day, perhaps not far in the future, in which it is illegal to raise cows, pigs, and other animals for food. The ground for this will not be animal welfare, as you might expect, but environmentalism. Individual animals, qua sentient beings, have intrinsic value.

Herzog, unsurprisingly, uses “it” to refer to animals, eats and wears them, and “[does] not feel particularly guilty about it” (P.S., He watched cockfighting and killed and skinned animals, but won’t eat veal. On page 172, when Herzog writes, “I am conflicted over many moral issues involving animals,” I respond, “No kidding!”

Farm animals also benefit from the humane farming movement, even if the animal welfare changes it effects are not all that we should hope and work for. If the goal is not moral perfection for ourselves, but the maximum benefit for animals, half-measures ought to be encouraged and appreciated. Wolves eat sheep.

Kristof, who takes note of the trend represented by the animal welfare proposition on the ballot in California this fall.
