Many people have said to me that they believe if they started thinking about what they are responsible for, or what we do as a species to other species--and particularly if they have to see too much--they'd break down and don't think they'd ever recover. They choose instead to focus on "higher" or "cleaner" matters.

The European Community and the member states signatory to the treaty are required “to pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals.” In 2002 the German Parliament amended Article 26 of the Basic Law to give nonhuman animals the right to be “respected as fellow creatures” and to be protected from “avoidable pain.”

Please note the vast generalizations here, but, in the areas of religion, at least orthodox religion and there are varying levels of how fundamental you want to go, there is only one species with a soul and that is the human. Therefore, we are the only ones who matter and the only ones who should have rights.

They're from a legal farm in Illinois, so the law isn't the reason. However, with lions the story is different because they are a vulnerable species in the wild, and their numbers are declining.
