This species is found on the African continent, in Angola, as well as central, eastern, and southern Africa. They are the heaviest and largest living birds, with adult common ostriches weighing anywhere between 140-320 lbs and laying the largest eggs of any living land animal. Ostrich eggs have been used by humans for millennia.

African Harrier-Hawks, snakes and other predators frequently raid weaver colonies to rob the nests of eggs and chicks. This group of 4 species (as well as all the remaining “weavers” that are covered below) are not even placed in the weaver family ( Ploceidae ) but in Passeridae – the Old World Sparrow family.
