Recently a baby was born in North Carolina with Trisomy 13, a chromosomal abnormality so severe most carriers die at birth. Name-calling and charges of agenda-promoting ensued. He became a symbol of overcoming the odds, with hundreds of thousands of people around the world donating and writing him internet messages.

Take, for instance, the word “ruddy” Outside of birding, when was the last time you used it? I realize this beat of mine is supposed to have a southeastern bent, and the Ruddy Turnstone is a fairly common seaside dweller on both sides of the North American continent. The Pac Loon never made an appearance.
