The history of Tembe Elephant Park in South Africa is a slightly unusual one. Elephants used to cross the border here before the war, but the fighting increased incidents of poaching as law and order broke down, leading to highly traumatised elephants crossing the border. Tembe Elephant Park is a mosaic of savannah and forest.

Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa are heavily eBirded because Americans regularly visit. This is where you find a birding phenomenon that makes the annoyances of regular road checkpoints with either military officers or local law enforcement, whizzing scooters, and bumpy roads worth the effort. eBird is a huge help with that.

After leaving Africa, I was fearing a real let down in my birding. New Zealand had been good, Australia was incredible, and South Africa was almost life altering. This leg of the trip was for the most part all about my father-in-law. Where do you go from there? Well, for us, we went to Doha, Qatar.

Maybe Floridians will then use the scientific name cafer – though with its origin in the terms Kaffir, Caffre, or Caffer applied to some indigenous peoples in South Africa (HBW), this may not be a good choice either. At least in the German language, the term “Kaffer” is a derogatory term for dark-skinned people.

Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa – it was established in 1895. For the German flag, the “Grundgesetz” (the German basic law) states that the color of the national flag is black-red-gold. The quality is similar though (on a highly abstract level). Poor creatures.
