To insure that those places continue to exist, birders should lead the way on education and advocacy regarding the Refuge System. Farallon NWR , a group of islands near San Francisco, hosts the largest colonies of breeding seabirds south of Alaska. The reason is twofold, size and mission. It’s not just for the birds.

Between Two Worlds

Last week, I returned to Morelia, Mexico, my home for the past 30 years, from twelve days in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I spent my childhood and teenage years. This considerable distance is why I am always surprised to see so many of the same species in both places. While in California on this trip, I saw 75 species.
