Choosing to adopt a dog rather than get one at the pet store (or what some like to refer to as “puppy mill”) is a beautiful thing—essentially you are saving a poor pup from euthanasia and you’re providing a an animal with a good home. Except for the poor pit bulls, street dogs are about the most vilified canines on the planet. Let me tell you – I’ve met some street dogs who curl up with cats and babies, and I’ve met some pet dogs (like my human’s grandmother’s Chihuahua!) Look, I’m a pet now.

And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs.
