My inbox this month has informed me that November is Vegan Awareness Month! And Adoption Awareness Month. I am a vegan who has adopted a diabetic greyhound who eats vegan food ( Natural Balance ), and who is adopting a boy from Russia. Some don't allow people over 40 to adopt. Others don't.

And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs.

The life expectancy of greyhounds is 12-15 years. She was adopted immediately, but returned almost as quickly because the people didn't realize how inconvenient diabetes can be. Diabetes shortens the life expectancy of human and nonhuman animals, by years. There she is. She has beaten the odds and made it another year.
