Perhaps some other time I’ll write in more detail about the links between Minnesota’s Bell Museum and birds. Now I’ll just note that the Bell Museum was closed for a long time during a move to a new location; the Bell had its grand opening last Sunday; I took some pictures to demonstrate the Bell-Bird link and here they are.

But what about birds? One enterprising New Orleans-area bird rescuer is doing just that. As reported by the fine folks at The Dodo , after Hurricane Katrina forced Katrina “Kasia” Perkowska to evacuate, she started bringing her pet Wood Duck , Scooter, to her mother-in-law’s nursing home in Mississippi. Sounds like a win-win.

Well, it’s happened again – my first bird of the year was a crow. For the most part, they conduct their morning journey in silence, but sooner or later one of these crows is destined to become my first bird observation of the year, either by uttering “caw!” Old Crow is named not for the bird, but for Dr. James C. or “uh-huh!”

Maybe it was a version of the Mississippi River, maybe it was a version of the Warren River, likely both. Non-bird watchers without binoculars and experience are notoriously bad sources of information. Atop the ridge, where no one will ever build cabins because it is too high up, is a grove of white pines. More alarm calling.
