Yesterday I saw two small ducklings in a group of ducks and geese, but their mom didn’t seem to be around them or attentive. Will ducks “babysit” or adopt ducklings that have been abandoned? Do ducks and geese have a sense of community together if they become familiar with each other?

There are three species of waterfowl that birders in most of the eastern United States are going to encounter on almost any birding outing that includes a pond, lake, or other body of water – The Usual Waterfowl. Pity the hen Mallard that gets abandoned by her mate and left to raise a nest full of ducklings completely on her own.
