I had been in Seattle during the previous week and was surprised to find that Chicago was not so advanced into spring. A Common Grackle appeared to be more reluctant to take the plunge into the shallow water, but once it did, it thrashed about with abandon.

These birds certainly have a big fan in Alex Washoe, a freelance writer and bookseller in Seattle, WA. I know about the common mistakes people make when they find young birds, assuming that because they’re on the ground with no other birds in sight they must be abandoned or in need of rescue. What happened to my chickadees?

It was a bad winter storm in Seattle. Our neighborhood–one of the oldest in Seattle–lost power, and we didn’t get it back. We abandoned our house for the safety of my parents’ house on the other side of town. If only I had known… We were the last neighborhood in Seattle to be reenergized.
