When they first landed on its shores in the 1500s, the Portuguese discovered a vast stretch of verdant rainforest cloaking much of the Atlantic coast of what would one day be Brazil. Through centuries of deforestation, only 7% of this forest’s original area remains in remnants scattered within the most densely populated region of Brazil.

As a youngster of 10-weeks old, it is abandoned by its parents and left to fend for itself. The long shifts before swapping duties reduce the number of times that the birds have to run the gauntlet of the gulls and increase their chances of succesfully raising the chick to the age of abandonment.

The bird scraped at its face which must have taken many stings, but eventually most of the wasps gave up and abandoned the nest. The Gray-headed Kite is usually known for waiting on high perches rather than skulking behind the goal posts at a Sunday soccer match.
