A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. Their presence indicates large mammals nearby – and only a few meters away, one Southern White Rhinoceros mother with a calf disappears among the bushes. The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus.

In early November 2020, there were 15 countries with more than 1000 species eBirded so far. Indian Rhinoceros in Kaziranga, photo Anuwar Hazarika/Wikimedia Commons. So I lowered my threshold to 500 and that worked well… for Costa Rica and South America, that is (especially Peru).
