Eventually, the name came to be attached to another kind of game hunting device with which we’re more familiar today: life-sized wooden carvings of waterfowl floated on water to fool birds into landing within range of nearby hunters lying in wait. Decoy is based in the Napa Valley,not too far north of “Fresh Air” Janson’s bridge.

As a birder, this 72 minute documentary film about the Duck Stamp Contest didn’t accomplish what I was hoping it might – get people excited about the Duck Stamp, or at least wildlife conservation. The film follows several contestants on their journey to win what is described as the “Olympics of Wildlife Art.”

Hunting: You may have noticed that the Written Species Accounts include a section on hunting. I am a city girl and until I became a birder my contact with hunting was limited to occasionally seeing dead deer on the tops of cars in upstate New York. So–not a fan of hunting. I was really taken aback when I saw this.
