Mid-June has so much to offer in the temperate zones, with breeders in one half of the world and migrants in the other. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a Barn Swallow that kept him company in a bird blind while Seaside Sparrows sang and Common Terns hunted in Wildwood, NJ. And to those of you in the polar zones, just why ?

I’m sure regular visitors to this area could tell you more about how the winds and tides affect the migrating birds and when the breeders start to nest. My particular favorite terns were the Sandwich Terns, a bird I rarely see in any numbers and just generally good looking with that natty yellow-tipped bill.

The authors’ detailed delineation of problems with the accuracy of NYC breeding bird surveys or with the limits of historical writings may test a reader’s patience.

If you see a flock of kestrels in southern Europe, then the chances are that they will be Lessers, for the Common Kestrel never flocks, though occasionally in summer you will see a family hunting together. However, a drastic decline followed, and census results for 2016 and 2017 produced counts of around 2,500 pairs.
