This large woodpecker is one of Cuba’s rarest birds, with a small population of 600-800 individuals, who are mostly seen on the Zapata Peninsula.** They nest in palms, and we found a small area where we observed several couples investigating and preparing nest holes. The wren comes in! Then up and around us to the other side.
