The Birding Rally Challenge Peru 2012

In early December of 2012 we had the opportunity to cover this hard-core rally in the south of Peru. Besides the birds, the teams were distracted by half a dozen primate species and rare Giant River Otters. Each day of the rally kicked off at the respectable time of 4 in the morning and ended after dark.

However very few birders ever venture to areas off this well-beaten track, so with this in mind, I decided to explore a fascinating but ornithologically little known corner of Ethiopia in January 2012, to see what surprises awaited me. As the sky turned rosy with dawn, we stopped for some excellent additions to our burgeoning bird list.

Even among our primate relatives, whoa are generally very smart, “Theory of Mind” is found in only a few species. Over time, as the crow has a second then a third opportunity to extract food from the box, the bird becomes less concerned, as experience has taught it that the mysterious menacing stick isn’t really a threat.
