In early December of 2012 we had the opportunity to cover this hard-core rally in the south of Peru. Besides the birds, the teams were distracted by half a dozen primate species and rare Giant River Otters. Each day of the rally kicked off at the respectable time of 4 in the morning and ended after dark.

Fortunately for we humans, placing primates properly phylogenetically in relation to the other mammals requires an act or two of faith at the deeper ends of the family tree, but it is probably true that primates and rodents share a common stock to the exclusion of others, so maybe we are all mice. see: Matthew E. However very few birders ever venture to areas off this well-beaten track, so with this in mind, I decided to explore a fascinating but ornithologically little known corner of Ethiopia in January 2012, to see what surprises awaited me. As the sky turned rosy with dawn, we stopped for some excellent additions to our burgeoning bird list.

Wild birds I’ve raised from tiny, featherless orphans demonstrate attachment to me, as would be expected for any young creature with a surrogate mother, even a weird, long-limbed primate mother. Released March 20, 2012, it’s in its second printing, which may have something to do with its being selected as Book of the Week on Oprah.com.
