Best Bird of the Year 2012

As 2012 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 and 2011 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding. I wrote about the experience here.

Chapter One is all about Marybeth’s 2012 Big Year, an adventure she shares with Lynn, a fishing enthusiast who is probably the most supportive big year/300 year birding partner in the history of listing.

The Jewel Hunter: A Book Review About One Birder’s Quest for Pittas and Beer

On the other hand, Phoebe Snetsinger’s memoir, Birding on Borrowed Time , becomes tedious because of her lack of emotional disclosure. Press, Fall 2012. Kingbird Highway is a great read because it is also a classic story of a young man growing up. The Jewel Hunter can be frustrating in this respect. WILDGuides, 2010 (UK), 424p.
