Since 1984 it has been planted with native bush and pests were controlled, and is now used as a wildlife reserve. In 2009 the island as returned to the local iwi (tribe), but it is still managed by the Department of Conservation. The island represents one of only three places in North Island that has this New Zealand endemic.
