Right Whale Sighting in the Azores

A brief story with two subjects I love, whales and the Azores. On 5th January 2009 a North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) was seen 5 miles south of Faial Island in the Azores by biologists from Whale Watch Azores and the University of the Azores (UA). African Penguins in Peril

10,000 Birds

Their numbers have declined so rapidly that a paltry 10 percent of the pre-20th century population remains (read Adam Riley’s post on Africa’s endangered species ). Sharks, Cape Fur Seals and even Killer Whales will prey on them in the ocean. In 2009 the population was recorded as 20,699 pairs.
