The return of the Banded Lapwing

It spent its visit at the Golf Course with the Masked Lapwings Vanellus miles and the previous visit by the species had been in February 2008 and prior to that September 2005. We have never seen as many Zebra Finches as we have this year and there are a lot more Budgerigars and Diamond Doves in the Broome area. How wrong we were!

The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus. This time they appear more relaxed, but nervousness might be a better politics: in 2007, poachers killed only 13 rhinos in South Africa, but in 2008 already 83, in 2009 – 122, in 2010 – 333, in 2011 – 448 and in 2012 a staggering 668!

The Woodpeckers of New York City

I have actually heard them referred to as “ladder-backed woodpeckers” or “zebra-backed woodpeckers” but that first colloquial name should be avoided lest it cause confusion with the species of that name from the southwest.) In flight, watch for the white patch on each wing that shows at the base of their primaries.
