Note: This is an account, originally published in June 2006, of my quest to remove a jinx bird from my bird-watching soul. I raised a bottle of beer in its honor, then headed for my hotel, satisfied that the day was mine. For stones I used pieces of logs—something my friends in the tropics call a monkey bridge.

Tika and her longtime mate, Kobuk, had raised eight litters of puppies together and were enjoying their retirement years in the home of my friend, Anne.
