She was adopted immediately, but returned almost as quickly because the people didn't realize how inconvenient diabetes can be. Diabetes shortens the life expectancy of human and nonhuman animals, by years. We spent the end of 2004 and beginning of 2005 getting fired by vet after vet. Violet was just under four-years old.

And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs.
