The individual I am pictured holding ( above ) was a friendly bird that (rather like a dog) seemed happy to be handled. On a visit in October 2022, I found ibises feeding with cattle in scruffy roadside paddocks adjacent to the marismas ( photographs below ). Here they were easy to overlook.

Forgotten Prairies

Ferruginous Hawks are native to our western short-grass prairies and their diet comprises almost completely of prairie dogs. Well, the ongoing issues of land development, sport shooting, and the rancher’s war on these animals keeps prairie dog populations from ever booming. Not too bad eatin’, huh?

The lady living on a farm by the Gaborone Dam said ‘I saw a croc taking an egret.’. Her husband, a diving instructor, said ‘I wouldn’t dive in this lake.’. Grey Heron 4.
