We had learnt from signs over the days we had been in Singapore that they have a problem with people dumping unwanted pets and we presume this to be the case in the reservoir. We had not been expecting to see a Banded Woodpecker and there we had one right in front of us. However, I do have some photographs of the Banded Woodpecker !

Starlings, they’ll dutifully explain, are ruthless invasives that have been responsible for the serious declines of several beloved native species, like the Red-headed Woodpecker ( Melanerpes erythrocephalus ) and the Eastern Bluebird ( Sialia sialis ). She’s not really a birder, but having been friends with me she knows that they are there, watches some ( Red-bellied Woodpeckers are her favorite) and will even drink shade-grown coffee because she knows it’s good for migratory birds. My friend Lorraine is awesome. Her nickname is Fabulous Lorraine.
