I already have a history of searches for this species. A pair of screeching Blacksmith Lapwings was flying around as six Burchell’s Zebras were quenching their thirst, suspiciously observing surroundings every now and then. Actually, when I started to bird, my second ever duck, after the Mallard, was a Ruddy Shelduck!

But my long wait to see antelope, zebras and everything in between is finally over. In California I smelt the breath a Blue Whale as it passed feet beneath my boat. You may not get the species counts that the race delivers, but you’ll have memories burned into your skull. In the Bahamas I swam in a pod of feeding dolphins.
