In addition to the hummingbirds, a few of the other highlights of the morning were the Gamble’s Quail, Inca Doves, Cooper’s Hawk, red-napped Sapsucker, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Gila Woodpecker, Bewick’s Wren, White-wing Doves, Plumbeus Vireo , and of course, I finally got a decent photo for the White-breasted Nuthatch. 12 House Finch.

Visitors on the Range

Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears. Things started on a promising note, with Mountain Bluebirds and the pale local race of Song Sparrow both evident in the visitor center parking lot.
