Sea Shepherd Goes on Mission to Protect Bluefin Tuna

In Qatar yesterday nations voted down a proposed ban on exporting Atlantic bluefin tuna. Greenpeace says the New Zealand Government voted against the ban – spelling disaster for the future of the species. Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully wasn’t available today to confirm how New Zealand voted.

The Little Big Year 2018: Best Birds of the Year!

In the end, I truly did set out to reduce the number of birds that I feature here from 1302, my years total species, down to 10-12. The Southern Brown Kiwi on Stewart Island, New Zealand, that ran down the path in front of me, was never captured. The first bird in that grouping would be the White-crowned Helmut-shrike.

The Little Big Year-week 46: All this fun comes to an end

When we returned to Tucson, from the Bahamas, I was approaching a milestone number, 1300 bird species, and drove myself hard, climbing, hiking, searching, and driving all over the state of Arizona looking for those last eight birds. So below is what the year looked, by the numbers: Total Number of Little Big Year Species: 1302.

Week 20: Doha, and on to Scotland!

10,000 Birds

New Zealand had been good, Australia was incredible, and South Africa was almost life altering. Well, for us, we went to Doha, Qatar. In the end, I ended up with 9 species, 4 of which were new to the list, the Black-crowned Sparrow Lark, White-checked Bulbo, House Crow , and the Indian Silverbill. Wish me luck!

Collaborative list – December 2018

In reverse order, the medals were awarded for “most species seen in a country”, to Australia with 420, USA got the silver, scoring 556 while the runaway winner was Costa Rica with 646 species. New Zealand Scaup – Aythya novaeseelandiae. New Zealand Grebe – Poliocephalus rufopectus.
